Shaping the Future of Medicine: Family Medicine Residency Program Welcomes New Preceptors
11/19/2024
The family medicine residency program at Crestwood Medical Center is more than just a training ground—it's a community of learning, mentorship, and professional growth. Designed to equip residents with the clinical expertise and skills necessary to excel in their medical careers, the program thrives on collaboration between passionate preceptors and dedicated residents.
Guidance from Seasoned Preceptors
Dr. Courtney Bowen and Dr. Pamela Angelo, both experienced physicians, recently joined the residency program to serve as preceptors for the residents. They bring their wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to shape the future of medicine through their mentorship.
Dr. Bowen describes her role as a responsibility to help train up the residents and make sure that they're up to par with their knowledge and skills. She believes in equipping residents with the tools they need to succeed.
Dr. Angelo shares a similar commitment to mentorship, emphasizing the importance of personalized training. “As a preceptor, I focus on helping residents balance the study of medicine with compassionate patient care. It’s a privilege to guide them as they grow into confident, capable physicians.”
A Hands-On Learning Approach
A family medicine residency program typically lasts three years after completing medical school. During this time, residents receive hands-on clinical training, work with patients under supervision, and learn to manage a wide range of medical conditions across all age groups.
Dr. Bowen notes the enthusiasm that residents bring to the clinic. “They are excited and very motivated about learning, looking up all the differential diagnoses and possible treatment plans.” This dedication is key to their development, as well as the continued delivery of excellent patient care.
A Vision for the Future
The residency program is not just about clinical training; it’s about shaping compassionate, skilled, and resourceful physicians. Dr. Bowen hopes to share her experience from private practice to prepare residents for the challenges of the ever-evolving medical landscape. “I want to share that knowledge with the residents and help them in their future endeavors,” she says.
Dr. Angelo adds, “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the progress residents make, knowing that we’re not just training doctors but preparing leaders in the field of family medicine.”
What Happens After Completing a Family Medicine Residency?
Once residents complete their program, they are eligible to take the board certification exam from the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) or a similar certifying body. Passing this exam allows them to become board-certified family physicians. After certification, graduates can:
- Join or establish a private practice
- Work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, or community health centers
- Pursue specialized areas of interest through fellowships (e.g., geriatrics, sports medicine, obstetrics, etc.) or
- Engage in academic medicine or research
